What to write about

  • Corrections: the page address, what looks wrong and, if you have one, a link to the source that shows the right value. Mistakes in data, maps or text are fixed first.
  • Teachers and students: the age group and the topic you are covering. We are glad to add maps, diagrams or printable worksheets that would help a lesson, and to explain how a number on the site was calculated.
  • Data questions: which map, plate or country page you are asking about. The sources and methods page may already answer it.
  • Translations: the site is published in eight languages. If a sentence reads badly or a place name is wrong in your language, send us the page address and your suggested wording.
  • Privacy requests: questions about personal data, or requests to access or delete information you sent us. See the privacy policy for what we collect.
  • Partnerships and press: museums, schools, publishers and science communicators who want to use or link to our maps. Please read the terms and conditions for reuse rules first.
  • Advertising: questions about the ads shown on the site. Note that we do not sell sponsored articles or paid placements.

Before you write

A few tips help us answer quickly. Include the full page address and, for map problems, the browser and device you use. If you are writing about a specific earthquake or volcano, its name and date are enough for us to find it in the source data. You can write in any of the site's languages.

What we cannot help with

We are not a warning or emergency service and cannot give personal safety advice about a specific earthquake, eruption or storm. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency number. For official warnings, follow your national meteorological or geological agency, such as the US Geological Survey, the Japan Meteorological Agency or your local civil protection authority.

Response time

We read every message and usually reply within two working days. Corrections that need a new data check can take a little longer, and we will let you know when a fix is live.
